Cool Car Rear Diffusers

The origins of diffusers can be traced back to the 1977 Lotus Type 78 F1 conceived by Colin Chapman, Peter Wright and Tony Rudd.  Rear Diffusers, in an automotive context, is a shaped section of the underbody which improves the car's aerodynamic properties by enhancing the transition between the high-velocity airflow underneath the body and the much slower free stream airflow of the ambient atmosphere.  Because a vehicle displaces air as it moves forward, the air molecules in the back of the vehicle get disrupted causing a vacuum of low pressure air.

To help channel the high speed air flow coming from underneath the body,  diffusers redirects the high speed air flow to transition smoothly transition into the low pressure vacuum in the back. This will in turn give you a smooth flow of air under the body as it passes the rear diffusers.  This will reduce turbulence and allow your vehicles other aerodynamic components perform to the best of their ability.

If your ride has a smooth or flat underbody you may not need Rear Diffusers.  Even so-called "flat bottomed" racing cars, such as those in F1, can create significant down force from well-shaped small rear diffusers.

Some body kits rear bumpers may contain an incorporated rear diffusers molded into the fiberglass or urethane.  This gives you a streamline look and gives you a smoother flow of air as there are no seams on the blades of the rear diffusers.

Rear diffusers can be made of different types of materials, but carbon fiber has become one of the most popular types these days with its light weight material and stylish designs.  The black look of the carbon fiber is also a nice accent touch to your rear bumper.

Rear Diffusers Works with other aerodynamic components to:

  • Reduce drag
  • Reduce lift
  • Adds aggressive appearance
