There are many cool upgrades that you can do to your car. Some are for show only but some can improve your cars ability to perform as well such as an aftermarket bumper. A bumper can be designed in a way that will improve traction at great speeds and reduce underbody lift that can cause you to lose control.
A new bumper will redesign your vehicles front end and give it some class and personality. Replacing your OEM bumper with an upgraded bumper with aerodynamic properties will improve your traction by creating down force. When you drive at fast speeds the airflow coming straight at your car is usually allowed to travel under your cars body. This is okay in normal driving conditions, but if you drive fast then you need a bumper that can redirect that air over the top of your car, eliminating the lift and oppositely creating down force. Your bumper isn't the only part that can create down force and eliminate lift.
Accessories that can assist your bumper in eliminating lift and creating down force are:
- Side Skirts
- Rear Diffusers
- Spoiler or Wing
- Wind Splitters
- Air Dams
- Canards
Some of these accessories are simple bolt on applications, and some you will need help from a professional if you are not skilled as an installer. A bumper can be a more complicated replacement if you haven't done it before. Plus your bumper will need to be painted as well, and this is a must to get a quality paint job and if you take your bumper to a body shop they can install and paint it for you.
There are a few main materials that a bumper can be made from. Fiberglass can be the most common due to its ease of manufacturing and inexpensive cost. Urethane is a more expensive yet a bit more durable and flexible as well. Last of all is carbon fiber which is very light weight yet durable as well. Carbon fiber has a great look as well.
